Welcome to our site!
Down Syndrome Support - Cape (DSSC) is an organisation run by parents of children with Down Syndrome for parents with children who have Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.
There are 3 aspects to our organisation:
1) Information meetings :- where we invite a speaker to inform us of programs, policies, services that could help us improve the lives of our children living with Down Syndrome
2) A toy library:- Situated at the Red Cross Children's Hospital, the Toy Library is open to parents and children who come to receive stimulation, support as well as loan toys and games to take back home. Unfortunately we are only able to open 2 days a week. Many of the parents who come with their children to the library have little or no income and so the opportunity for Speech therapists, occupational therapists, play therapists and the like, are not financially an option for them. WE are hoping that we receive enough funding so that next year we can run the library for 5 days of the week, thus reaching more children in the greater Cape area.
3) Outreach programme:- We have one co-ordinator who goes out into Khayalitsha, Gugulethu and Langa townships and gives assistance in any way she can to families who are dealing with a child with an intellectual disability.
